Qu'est-ce que le CRI ?

Le CRI co-construit et partage de nouvelles manières d'apprendre, d'enseigner, de faire de la recherche et de mobiliser l'intelligence collective dans les domaines des sciences du vivant, de l’apprendre et du numérique pour relever les objectifs de développement durable (ODDs) des Nations Unies.

Le CRI développe et accueille des programmes d’enseignement qui vont de la maternelle au lycée, avec Savanturiers - École de la Recherche, de la licence au doctorat et s’étendent tout au long de la vie, au sein de l’Université de Paris.

Au coeur du CRI se trouvent un collaboratoire de recherche INSERM, un MakerSpace spécialisé en innovation frugale et un laboratoire digital.

Le CRI organise de nombreux évènements ouverts au grand public et conférences internationales et est à l’origine de l’initiative #LearningPlanet en partenariat avec l'AFD et l'UNESCO dont il est aussi titulaire d'une Chaire. Il bénéficie également du soutien de la Ville de Paris, du Plan d'Investissement d'Avenir et de nombreux autres partenaires.

Le CRI a été fondé en 2006 par François Taddei et Ariel Lindner et est accompagné de façon déterminante par la Fondation Bettencourt Schueller depuis ses débuts.

MOOC BIG - BIOINFORMATIQUE POUR LA GÉNÉTIQUE MÉDICALE

De nombreux pays développent leurs programmes de médecine génomique, faisant entrer l’ère du séquençage de génome dans le soin courant. Les futurs professionnels de santé et spécialistes en génétique médicale doivent comprendre les différentes étapes qui mènent du phénotypage au diagnostic via le séquençage haut débit (SHD). Accompagnant cette révolution médicale, il existe un besoin de formation de la communauté des praticiens aux notions d’algorithmique, d’analyse de données SHD, de statistiques et de gestion des données massives. Quelques initiatives de formation sont proposées par des universités et sociétés savantes à l'échelle française et européenne. Néanmoins, l’offre actuelle d’enseignement francophone est limitée, autant en formation initiale qu’en formation continue.

Nous avons proposé la création d’un enseignement en ligne introductif à la génomique humaine sous la forme d'un MOOC, le MOOC BiG pour Bioinformatique pour la Génomique Médicale.

How bird biomechanics can help to produce more efficient vocal prosthetics ?

We share remarkable similarities with birds. Among them, bipedalism and complex language are two traits often seen as human specificities, yet also present in birds. In my project, I want to focus on birdsong to build a new generation of vocal prostheses. Patients suffering from an advanced stage of laryngeal cancer often have to undergo a total surgical removal of the larynx, which is the human voice source. Our voice is used to communicate but also defines our identity. Thus, a voice alteration or a complete speech loss can cause emotional and social issues. To recover the ability to speak, a prosthesis, mimicking the vocal folds, is usually placed between the trachea and the oesophagus. The exhaled air crosses a vibrating element and produces a substitute voice. Unfortunately, the created voice is of poor quality: it is weak, with a low fundamental frequency. In addition, the limited lifetime of the devices, due to biofilm coming from mucus/material interactions, forces a frequent device replacement. To date, there is no voice prosthesis lasting more than 3 months and able to reconstruct a natural-sounding human voice. In this context, birds should attract attention. First, their vocal repertoire is incredibly diverse, with pitch spanning from 100 to 12 000 Hz, compared to only 85 to 255 Hz in human speech. Moreover, the unique structure of their vocal organ, the syrinx, allows the production of sounds from the vibration of membranes, located in the wall of the syrinx. Thus, unlike in mammals, the air is flowing through the vocal tract without crossing any structures. The accurate biological and physical experimental data I want to gather will feed a predictive aero-acoustic model to understand cause-effect relationships between shape, motions, and produced sounds in birds. It will provide the necessary elements to design and prototype more durable and efficient prostheses, which will produce voices that will sound more humane.

You can take this test alone, in paris, or with an entire team.

To enliven test taking time, we will compliment you with taco tasting time. Make your own tacos or try out some of our own recipes by the Living Campus team.

Panier d'Alexandre: Communal Dinner & Seasonal Food Workshop

On Thursday April 23, the Living Campus team is organising a spring communal dinner, where we will put together a dish with fresh seasonal vegetables and fruits. This event will be an occasion to spend time together and learn about a model of sustainable agriculture.

What is Le Panier D'Alexandre? Every thursday, Alexandre delivers fresh food from his farm on bycicle. He is an example of local, small scale organic agriculture, and an example of a low carbon footprint business.

We'd like to introduce you to seasonal, local foods and share current and future models of sustainable agriculture.

The AIRE team organizes a free international colloquium on Networks and Evolution to be held at Sorbonne Université (Campus Pierre et Marie Curie, Jussieu Métro Station), on April 24th from 9 :30 to 17 :00. The event is free.

It will consist of two distinct parts : scientific conferences in the morning by renowned speakers, and practical bioinformatic tutorials in the afternoon (you can attend one but not the other, there is no need for registration for the morning, but we require registration for the afternoon event, since 15 seats only are available). All academics, and in particular students, are very welcome to attend,

Transition écologique : que peut l'école ?

Une journée d’étude et de débats co-organisée par CRAP-Cahiers Pédagogiques et Savanturiers - École de la Recherche

A l’occasion de la publication du numéro 560 de mars 2020 des Cahiers pédagogiques « La transition écologique, un défi pour l’école » et dans le cadre du chantier de l’école au défi de l’anthropocène ouvert par Savanturiers, nous souhaitons contribuer à mobiliser le monde scolaire autour des enjeux écologiques : quels enseignements scolaires sont nécessaires ? Comment prendre en compte les dérèglements climatiques dans la mission de l’école ? Quelles pistes d’actions proposer à la communauté éducative ? Quelles formations pour les enseignants ?

Art in the Age of Digital Reproduction - PCA Student Symposium

Paris College of Art presents symposium addressing the impact of digital technology on the creation, distribution, and experience of art in 2020

In his 1935 essay, "The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction,” philosopher and literary critic Walter Benjamin considered the technological inventions of the time that were shifting the way humanity was experiencing the world, such as through film and photography. He argued that mechanical reproduction not only changed how art was created and distributed but changed the definition of art itself. Now, in 2020, with social media, 3D modeling, 3D printers, laser cutters, virtual reality, high-resolution cameras, and design software, how is art impacted by technology? The symposium “Art in the Age of Digital Reproduction” will consider how technology is impacting the creation, distribution, and experience of art today.

Participatory citizen science to improve autistic people's lives

Autistica and the Alan Turing Institute are working together to build a participatory, citizen science platform to gather data on how sensory processing affects autistic people’s navigation of the world. Numerous studies have confirmed that autistic people experience sensory processing differences, and that this can significantly impact their lives. One aspect which is not yet fully understood is how these differences affect the ways in which autistic people navigate different environments. In this talk, I will showcase the team's process of building a project that is participatory from the ground up. We ensure that all aspects of the project are designed and developed in collaboration with members of the autistic community through focus groups and user testing in the design phase. In close collaborations with the Open Humans community, we are developing a platform for which the software, design, process and governance documentation are all open source.

We give the individual contributors control over how their data is used on the platform. Flipping the traditional scientific study on its head, our goal is to give a voice to autistic citizen scientists and educate neurotypical people. We seek to empower everyone in supporting autistic people and their families in living long, healthy, happy lives. Combining open science, participatory design, transparent governance, inclusive community management, and collaborations across academia, industry and the third sector requires a diverse, interdisciplinary community of contributors.

CRI audience members will leave knowing how they can join the team and contribute to the project that same day, starting from information at our website and GitHub repository, or reuse the processes we've developed for their own citizen science research.

Biography

Kirstie Whitaker is a research fellow at the Alan Turing Institute (London, UK) and senior research associate in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Cambridge. Her work covers a broad range of interests and methods, but the driving principle is to improve the lives of neurodivergent people and people with mental health conditions. Dr Whitaker uses magnetic resonance imaging to study child and adolescent brain development and participatory citizen science to educate non-autistic people about how they can better support autistic friends and colleagues.

She is the lead developer of The Turing Way, an openly developed educational resource to enable more reproducible data science. Kirstie is a passionate advocate for making science "open for all" by promoting equity and inclusion for people from diverse backgrounds, and by changing the academic incentive structure to reward collaborative working.

She is the chair of the Turing Institute's Ethics Advisory Group, a Fulbright scholarship alumna and was a 2016/17 Mozilla Fellow for Science. Kirstie was named, with her collaborator Petra Vertes, as a 2016 Global Thinker by Foreign Policy magazine. You can find more information at her lab website: whitakerlab.github.io.
